Day 31: San Diego
Started the day with a 2 and half hour bus journey down to San Diego, compared to other journeys this was over in a flash! The hostel was right in the middle of the Gaslamps District of San Diego, it’s the old city centre, now just streets of bars, restaurants and shops. We had a wander round then headed down to the waterfront, and the big shopping plaza in the city centre (sounds like every other city we’ve vistited?). Went for a beer at a sports bar across the road from the hostel, ended up staying for 5 and chatting away to a local watching the football.
Went back to the hostel and got changed for Halloween…

The night out was good, the Gaslamps district seems to be busy all the time, never mind at Halloween – it’s just streets of bars really! Wish we had been their the Saturday before as the whole main street is closed off for a huge party. Partied a bit too much, neither of us remember getting home.
Horrendous hangover the next morning, another sit down shower for me to try and start the day (a bit like the lost night in New York), then dragged myself out in the day. Grant was enjoying how hungover I was, he said it made him feel better knowing how much more I was suffering than him.
Decided the best way to clear a hangover was to hire a speedboat and go explore San Diego bay, which was great fun. Can’t believe they gave a pretty fast boat to a hungover 22 and 23 year olds 10 minutes after we showed up, but they did! Spent an hour blasting around the bay, definitely got rid of the hangover.
Made a video for out friend Robbie when we were out on the water, as we knew he would have loved to have been there…
The next day we went to the San Diego Zoo for the day. I quite like zoo’s seeing as I get to see animals I wouldn’t otherwise, but I end up feeling bad because the animals are stuck in little cages. Thought San Diego would be a bit different because It’s a world famous zoon, but it wasn’t so much. The popular animals had good digs, but the other ones not so much.
All the Americans that knock on the glass and shout at the animals and things bug me as well, I saw a kid banging on the glass next to the polar bear when he was having a kip. Would have like to see the kid go and wake it up if the glass wasn’t there.
Still really enjoyed the zoo though, Pandas, Polar Bears, Gorillas and Elephants were highlights. A lot of the animals were either sleeping or in doors though, I couldn’t blame them, San Diego is roasting!
At night we went to a bar the guy we watched the football with had told us about, they had 100 different beers on tap. Makes a change from back home were you usually get about 3 and one is usually Tennents.
During dinner Grant said he was craving some peas, I said I would love some brocoli right now. I think we’ve been in America too long, I’m sick of fries!
Enjoyed San Diego, although we didn’t see too much other than city centre. I’d come back one day. Vegas in the morning, mustn’t grumble.
